Agave americana ssp. protoamericana has become a favorite hardy agave. It is a specie that has proven to be the largest and fastest growing of the winter hardy species. The foliage is a ghostly blue-gray, with pronounced bud imprints on the leaf surface. It forms huge upright clumps to 140 cm heigh and 240 cm wide, when given plenty of summer moisture and high fertility. When they mature at 10+ years old, they will be topped with huge flower spikes. Very desirable in the smaller landscapes through his form and cold hardiness, till -15°C.
