This evergreen clump-forming agave is the largest of the hardy agave parryi group which can grow to 60 cm. The very wide steely blue-grey foliage makes a striking rosette and it has a large sharp dark spine on tip, 2-3 cm long which can be tan, brown or black. This agave produces offsets and dies after blooming. It blooms in late spring or early summer and the flowers are on large stalk held as high as 3-4 m above foliage, branched pink bud opens to bright yellow flower. Hardy till -10°C but winter drainage is like by all agaves absolutely critical for survival in cold climates.
Its origin is Southwest Arizona, New Mexico, Northern Mexico.
