Cyathea medullaris is also called "The Black Tree Fern" because of its beautiful deep black trunk that may be as tall as about 20 m and 15-25 cm in diameter. The croziers of the new fronds are also deep black, covered with black hair and scales. The fronds are very impressive and can reach 6 m in length. It is native to New Zealand, Fiji and Polynesia. The fronds are soft like silk. Under good conditions this fern can be a rather fast grower depending on conditions: 20 cm per year. It likes the sun with some filtered light, sheltered from strong winds and it requires a sufficient amount of water.
Pay attention: this does not mean soaking wet, but very moist. Of course the soil should be well-drained. This is a cold-hardy tree fern. -3°C.

In our webshop we sometimes have this tree fern for sale.
