| Cyathea Smithii is a beautiful tree fern from North Island, South Island, Stewart Island and Chatham islands of New Zealand and is found on the subantarctic Auckland Islands and is therefore the most southerly occuring tree fern in the world. C.Smithii has quite a thick hairy trunk that can be as tall as 8 m, producing large soft beautiful 2.5 m long and 1.5 m wide yellow-greenfronds. It prefers a milder, cooler climate and a moist environment and it can tolerate colder conditions but needs protection from the wind. If grown outdoors in cold climates, some protection should be considered until the plant is established. Young ferns need protection from the sun, but the older ferns can withstand full sun. The only thing they really require is enough water to keep the soil moist and now and then some fertilizer. Of course the soil must be very well drained. It has a compact way of growing, and this is a very cold-hardy tree fern, -8°C. In our webshop we sometimes have this tree fern for sale. |
