| Treefern
sculptures from Vanuatu: |

These
monumental gradesculptures are from the north of Ambrym, one
of the hundreds islands from Vanuatu. The sculptures are made
in ‘Ambrym-style', also called the ‘classic style'.
Such treefern sculptures were and are still made before a
ceremony whereby a individual can grow in social order.
Grades give the right to wear special insignes, establishment
of artefacts (wooden sculptures) and eat by certain fires.
Condition for growing in rang is wealth, because the ceremony
has to be paid in pigs, so the highest range is often only
for rich men.
The look of the sculptures are made after their beauty idea:
wide nose, big nose holes, high forehead and long chin.
In the past the colonist and collectors liked the Ambrym-style
and as they ordered to make some, you can still find them
in musea.
Our sculptures are made for local ceremonial use, but purchased
befóre use in ceremonials. Used sculptures are seen
as sacral and can not be bought, also it is forbidden by the
government to export them.
The very exclusive sculptures which we have are 200-250 cm
high and cost € 3.500,--.
