Recently we work together with a Chinese nursery of 60 hectares. After various trial shipments and a visit to the nursery we started importing the Trachycarpus fortunei from China.
The difference with European cultivated T. fortunei shows well. As they grow in colder areas, Chinese fortunei's have more hair around the trunk and their color is darker. The orginal stock comes from the Himalaya and according to Asian palm experts they are one of the winterhardiest of the world.
These plants have a small but massive rootball of 15-20 ltr., they are not freshly cut in China, but have been specially cultivated for years, to avoid a shock reaction by export. Now they have been potted in 40-50 ltr. pots and we advise to protect the palm in the first year untill they are well-rooted.
