Fouquieria splendens

Fouquieria splendens is widespread from Texas to California and northern Mexico, also called “Devil's Walking Stick”. Although this plant looks like a cactus because of its long spines and desert habitat, it is not in the cactus family. The stems are leafless in dry times, and crowded with leaves after rain period. Individual stems, if planted, will grow new plants, and many fences have been made this way. The nectar-bearing flowers, growing in dense clusters at the end of the stems in the spring, are attractive to humming birds and insects. Later in the year, the flowers are replaced by clusters of decorative orange berries. Frost resistant till -15°C.
